BROOKLYN - The city's Department of Environmental Protection is beginning installation on thousands of wireless water meters.

DEP officials say wireless water meters transmit water consumption data at least four times a day and will give customers more accurate and timely records of water usage.

The goal of the agency is to connect 843,000 customers by January 2012.
