BROOKLYN - Two detectives took the stand today in the retrial of Keith Phoenix.

The jury heard from Detectives Steven Nieves and William Gonzalez regarding a statement Phoenix made in February 2009. According to Detective Gonzales, Phoenix said "I killed someone, does that make me a bad person??

Phoenix is accused of beating Ecuadorian immigrant Jose Sucuzhanay to death in 2008.

Last month, a judge declared a mistrial in Keith Phoenix's case after the jury couldn't come to a verdict.

Prosecutors say Phoenix and his friend, Hakim Scott, attacked Sucuzhanay and his brother because they thought they were gay.

Scott was convicted of manslaughter by a separate jury and faces up to 40 years in prison.
