BROOKLYN - Residents attending a public hearing Wednesday night on a controversial, 16-story project in Crown Heights learned the developer actually pulled out of the proposal.

Developer Cornell Realty had plans to change zoning laws for lots bought on Carol Street and Franklin Avenue, where there were plans for residential apartments.

The change, which was supposed to be voted on by Brooklyn Community Board 9's Land Use Committee Wednesday night, would have drastically raised building height limits from seven stories to 16.

Many community members say the change would have literally cast a shadow on the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, hurting the prized green space.

Residents say if Cornell Realty comes back with a new proposal, they're hoping it has more affordable housing and is much more beneficial for and fits with the character of the neighborhood.

News 12 reached out to Cornell Realty to find out why the developer pulled its proposal but did not receive a response as of Wednesday night.
