Ditmas Park residents voice concerns over Islamic youth center

(08/26/10) DITMAS PARK - Some Ditmas Park residents are voicing their opposition to an Islamic community center.

Residents say a vacant lot has been purchased by an Islamic group with the intentions of building a youth center there. Now residents are saying they don?t want the facility in their neighborhood.

"It would be like building a big school in the middle of a very quiet neighborhood," says resident Aaron Starrglass. Others say it would destroy the unique character of the neighborhood. Those who oppose the center say their feelings have nothing to do with religion and that they are simply concerned about the aesthetics of the neighborhood.

?It's a beautiful residential neighborhood and to put up a commercial building right between two Victorian homes is an inappropriate place for that structure," says resident Susan Siegel.
