BROOKLYN - Building officials are spreading awareness about the dangers of illegally converted apartments in the wake of a deadly City Line fire.

Officials say one man was killed when flames tore through the basement of a Drew Street home last Thursday. According to building inspectors, the cellar was illegally converted and lacked a second escape route.

The Department of Buildings spent the afternoon handing out fliers. One of the informational sheets included a list of renter's tips, informing tenants of what is needed in a basement or attic apartment, and warning them to steer clear of rooms without windows.
