BENSONHURST - Brooklyn salons may say tanning is as popular as ever, but many doctors are urging residents to avoid getting into a tanning bed.

Some doctors say tanning salons may actually be more harmful than the sun. One doctor says the beds have UVA rays, which go deeper into the skin. According to doctors, this could lead to malignant melanoma. However, salon owners claim the UVA rays are healthy. They add that tanning salons have some health benefits by providing vitamin D.

Doctors say they are not singling out indoor tanning. They add that residents should do all they can under normal circumstances to protect themselves from the sun.
