BROOKLYN - A dolphin that was trapped in the Gowanus Canal died Friday night before attempts could be made to rescue it.

The creature was stranded within the contaminated canal, which was declared a superfund site in 2010.

Animal rescue crews told News 12 that they were waiting to save the mammal until the next high tide. They said they believed that the dolphin could have freed itself with extra water in the area.
