BROOKLYN - Women throughout the borough are trying to impart a message of strength and empowerment this Mother's Day weekend.

Residents came together in Bedford-Stuyvesant to spread awareness of domestic violence in Brooklyn, and to celebrate mothers.

It was a day a pampering for the dozens who attended. They received manicures, new hair and make-up sessions, all provided by nonprofit organization Jericho Road Inc.

The women are all survivors of domestic violence and wanted to share their stories in order to empower others.

Phyllis Hall, an East New York mother, wrote about the horrors she endured in a survivor book. She says speaking out and acknowledging what happened helps her heal.
