Driver Elizabeth Mayard charged after fatally striking 5-year-old Rashard Charles on Empire Boulevard in Crown Heights

CROWN HEIGHTS - A woman has been charged after she allegedly hit a boy with her minivan last night, killing him.

Family friend Nielsen Thomson says at around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, 5-year-old Rashard Charles was exiting a taxi on Empire Boulevard with his mother, who also had an 8-month-old baby with her. Thomson says the family was walking across the street when a double-parked minivan hit the family as it was backing up.

Police say the driver, 23-year-old Elizabeth Mayard, initially drove off, but returned to the scene. Thomson says she returned after another driver told her she hit someone. Mayard was taken into custody and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and reckless driving.

Rashard was taken to Kings County Hospital where he as pronounced dead. His mother and the baby are expected to be OK.
