BROOKLYN - Residents in DUMBO got into the holiday spirit Thursday with a unique tree lighting ceremony.

The seemingly normal-looking Christmas tree is powered completely by clean energy provided from a fire pit. Start-up company Biolite has developed thermo-electric technology that will be producing the energy. Biolite says this is the first time they have ever lit a tree using clean energy.

The event was organized by the DUMBO Improvement District. They say the one-of-a-kind tree is a great way to showcase DUMBO as a technology hub in Brooklyn. Community members enjoyed calypso music and hot chocolate provided by Jaque Torres.

The fire pit will be burning weekdays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on weekends 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The lighting will last through Dec. 23.
