EAST FLATBUSH - Residents in East Flatbush say they're outraged over a new homeless shelter that’s being built in their neighborhood, as they're worried about its impact on the area.

The homeless shelter, which will serve women and children in need, is being built near Glenwood Road and East 46th Street. Residents say they're concerned over the shelter's effect on the area, with one community expressing concern it will lead to more crime.

Others claim they had no idea the shelter was going to be built until construction began. A spokesperson for the homeless services group building the shelter says plans were brought to the community in 2010, but residents say they were never told.

Elected officials say they're going to work with the community to keep the homeless shelter out.
