CROWN HEIGHTS - Tenants at the Ebbets Field Houses in Crown Heights celebrated Jackie Robinson's legacy with a party Saturday.

Robinson integrated Major League Baseball in 1947 when he was signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers. The team played at Ebbets Field, which was later razed and eventually turned into a housing complex. Lawmakers and residents say the complex's rich history is something to be proud of.

"Jackie Robinson ... didn't just integrate Major League Baseball - he helped integrate America," Assemblyman Hakeem Jefferies (D-57th District) said.

"People have forgotten the struggle that took place here and the struggle that we have to pick up and continue as far as crime and being compatible with each other," Brenda Scott, of the Ebbets Field Tenants Association said.

Participants say the first annual celebration is just the beginning. They are working with Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz to acquire funding for a statue of Robinson.

New Yorkers celebrate Jackie Robinson Day on April 15, the day Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers.
