Elderly woman killed in Bath Beach hit-and-run

BROOKLYN - Police say a man is in custody after he allegedly hit two elderly women with a van in Bath Beach, killing one of them.

Investigators say the van ran into Maria Prikul, 80, and another woman near the intersection of Bath and 18th avenues Saturday evening. Prikul was taken to Lutheran Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

The second woman, whose identity hasn't been released, was taken to the same hospital and treated for minor foot injuries, officials say.

Police say the van driver, Mario Vasquez, tried to flee the scene but was stopped by witnesses a few blocks away. Vasquez, 52, was arrested and charged with reckless driving, driving while intoxicated and operating a vehicle without a license.
