Elderly woman killed, son hospitalized in Sheepshead Bay fire

SHEEPSHEAD BAY - A fire in a Sheepshead Bay apartment killed an elderly woman and left her son in critical condition last night.

Community members said they were saddened to learn that a 98-year-old woman lost her life in a blaze firefighters tried to control for nearly 40 minutes. Police say two other people were in the third-floor apartment, one of whom was the woman's son. Witnesses say the fire broke out at around 10 p.m.

Authorities say four firefighters suffered minor injuries.

New York City fire officials say they believe the fire was caused by spaceheaters.
