Elevator murder suspect ordered held without bail

BROOKLYN - The Brooklyn man accused of fatally burning a woman in an elevator is being held without bail after his court appearance earlier today. Jerome Isaac, 47, has been charged with first-degree murder and arson in the death of Deloris Gillespie, 73. Prosecutors say they are analyzing some of the materials Isaac used to burn the woman, and that several security images show him at the scene of the crime. New York City Councilwoman Letitia James (D-District 35) spoke at the hearing on behalf of Gillepsie's family. Police say Isaac sprayed her with a liquid when she got off the elevator, lit her on fire and fled the scene. She was found in the elevator, where she was pronounced dead. James says she is in the process of setting up a burial fund for the family.
