Parents of these students say Sesame Street has taught their kids about literacy and community awareness, and the event helps them experience that instead of just watching it on television.

Elmo's appearance is part of Sesame Street's "Talk, Listen, Connect" initiative, which reaches military families and children and helps them deal with any struggles they may be having like when their parents are deployed.

The Valentine's Day event was canceled last year due to Superstorm Sandy, making this the first time the center has held the event.
