Empire Gold plates to bring NY some 'green'

BROOKLYN - The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has unveiled the new Empire Gold license plate that drivers will be forced to purchase in an effort to bring in revenue for the state.

The new gold-colored plate is mandatory for all 12 million vehicles registered in New York. The plates come with a price tag of $25 each, and their sale is expected to generate $129 million.

Drivers who want to keep their current license plate numbers will have to pay additional $20.

The Empire Gold license plates will become available in May. The state expects to have all the vehicles plated within two years.
