Family escapes fire in East 83rd Street apartment

A Canarsie family is grateful to be alive after surviving a fire inside their apartment this morning. Officials say it started in the second floor apartment on East 83rd Street around 9:30 a.m.

CANARSIE - A Canarsie family is grateful to be alive after surviving a fire inside their apartment this morning. 

Officials say it started in the second-floor apartment on East 83rd Street around 9:30 a.m. 

They say the building was safely evacuated and nobody was injured in the blaze. 

The woman from the apartment says her son discovered the fire when he smelled smoke coming from a back room.

Investigators say they are still trying to determine exactly what caused the fire.
