BROOKLYN - A family spokesperson of the 16-year-old that allegedly started the Coney Island fire on Sunday is apologizing to the families affected. The news comes after a police officer that responded to the scene died from his injuries.

Marcell Dockery was arrested and charged with arson, reckless endangerment and assault after starting the fire because he was bored. It's likely that the assault charge will be upgraded.

A family spokesperson of Dockery told News 12, "This has been a tragedy, not only for one family but for many families. So, right now we are just apologizing, openly apologizing and saying God be with those officers."

The NYPD confirmed that officer Dennis Guerra died this morning at Montefiore Medical Center. His body was then taken to Bellevue Hospital.

Guerra, 38, succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning and the effects of smoke inhalation during the high-rise building fire. He had been put in a medically induced coma and getting treatment in a hyperbaric chamber, but it was not enough to save his life.

Residents in the building that caught fire say Guerra's death is tragic. They sent their condolences to Guerra's family. They also sent well wishes to the second officer injured in the fire, Rosa Rodriguez, and hoped for her recovery.

Guerra had been in the police force for at least seven years and his father is a retired police officer. He leaves behind a wife and four children.
