Fans mourn Steinbrenner at Yankee Stadium

BROOKLYN - Fans are flocking to Yankee Stadium today to pay respect to owner George Steinbrenner.

Flags were lowered to half-staff at City Hall, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg called Steinbrenner a larger-than-life figure. Steinbrenner died yesterday of a massive heart attack at age 80.

At the stadium, fans created a makeshift memorial by placing flowers and candles on top of the team's emblem in front of Gate 4.

Many locals even left their Yankees caps and memorabilia in Steinbrenner's honor.

The Yankees players will honor 'The Boss' throughout the season by wearing uniforms with 'GS' embroidered onto patches.

The Yankees organization is planning a public memorial for Steinbrenner, but has yet to release details of the event.
