BROOKLYN - The FDNY wants Brooklyn residents to treat their Christmas trees with care to avoid a fire hazard over the holidays.

The FDNY says if people buy live trees, they should be cut fresh and watered frequently to keep them hydrated. Officials also advocate turning off tree lights when residents are not at home, keeping trees away from heat sources and anchoring trees to avoid falls.

Tree retailers tell News 12 Brooklyn trees will last much longer if these steps are followed. They also say things like aspirin and bleach water do not prolong the life of a tree.
