BROOKLYN - The FDNY has released a new public service announcement following the tragic fire in Brooklyn that claimed the lives of seven young siblings.

The fire department is hoping the short PSA will help encourage everyone to get smoke detectors, a simple task that can be life-saving.

Officials say there were no working detectors in the Sassoon home when flames broke out early Saturday, trapping the children upstairs where they were sleeping.

Fire experts have also been educating the community to make sure they have working batteries in their smoke alarms. A new law even requires a sealed 10-year battery that can't be removed and warns when it needs to be replaced.

Fire officials add that just one working detector can cut your chances of dying in a fire in half; however, you want to try to have at least one on each floor, including one near where you sleep. Don't forget to have an escape plan too.
