BROOKLYN - In the wake of several home fires recently in Brooklyn, the FDNY is offering fire safety tips to residents.

FDNY Lt. Anthony Mancuso says residents should make sure they have at least one smoke detector in their house and to test it monthly to make sure it works. In the most recent fatal fire in Brooklyn, investigators say the house had no working smoke alarms.

As for holiday decorations, Mancuso says holiday lights should have 'UL' on the package to show they were tested by the company. Artificial trees should be flame retardant and real trees should always be well-watered. If a Christmas tree starts drying out, residents should dispose of it.
