WASHINGTON - (AP) - A New York senator says federal regulators areexpected to move to ban caffeinated alcoholic drinks as soon asthis week.

Democratic Senator Charles Schumer, who has pushed the Obamaadministration to ban the beverages, said yesterday that the Foodand Drug Administration is expected to find that caffeine is anunsafe food additive to alcoholic drinks, essentially banning them.

The Federal Trade Commission will then issue letters tocaffeinated alcoholic beverage manufacturers warning that marketingthem could be illegal.

College students have been hospitalized after drinking thebeverages, including the popular Four Loko, and they have beenbanned in four states.
