Festival of Lights begins

BROOKLYN - Jewish residents in Brooklyn are celebrating the first night of Hanukkah tonight.

The Festival of Lights started at sundown and lasts for eight days.Hanukkah commemorates when the Maccabees defeated the Syrian-Greek army and drove the foreigners from their land thousands of years ago in Jerusalem. They then went on to rededicate the Holy Temple that was found in shambles and desecrated. There was only enough oil for one night of light, but the oil burned for eight days.

Jewish residents remember the miracle by lighting the menorah each night.
