Fire kills 1, damages 55th Street home

BROOKLYN - Fire officials say a blaze broke out inside an East 55th Street home, trapping and killing a woman in her 20s.

According to police, a family of three lived inside the home and both parents were able to escape. One neighbor says he tried to get inside the burning building to help the daughter, but was overcome by smoke.

Officials say one side of the home, where the young woman was trapped, suffered significant damage and is considered unstable.

Fire officials have yet to determine the cause of the blaze. The Red Cross was on hand to help the couple find temporary housing, food and clothing.
