Fire officials call Putnam Avenue fire suspicious

(08/30/10) BED-STUY - Firefighters are calling a two-alarm fire that broke out this morning on Putnam Avenue suspicious. Officials say the fire broke out at the three-story building at around 4:30 a.m. and injured 13 people.

One resident of the building, Henry, said he heard the fire erupt, but thought it was someone trying to break in. He says he called 911 immediately and by the time he hung up he was blocked by a wall of flames.

Firefighters were able to reach Henry and his friend in the third-floor apartment, but not before Henry's friend sustained burns on his chest. The firefighter who rescued him became engulfed in flames and carried him down a ladder that was still on fire. He and three other firefighters needed to be treated for burns.

Officials will only say the fire looks suspicious, but are not yet calling it arson.
