First New York City-born gorilla, Pattycake, dies at age 40

THE BRONX - The first New York City-born gorilla has died at the age of 40.

According to the Bronx Zoo, Pattycake was under medical care for chronic cardiac issues when she died Sunday. She was born in 1972 at the Central Park Zoo, but was transferred to the Bronx 10 years later.

Officials say the normal lifespan for zoo gorillas is 37 years old.
