BROOKLYN - Flatbush residents channeled their artistic instincts to help transform a neighborhood eyesore into a work of art.

The community organization Newkirk Cares Collaborative created an art contest that allowed people to vote on mural designs for the busy passageway that connects them to the Newkirk Plaza.

Artist Susan Jaramillo won with her piece titled Flatbush Dreams. She says she was inspired by incredible diversity in the area.

The mural is just one part of a larger initiative to renovate the entire plaza.
