BROOKLYN - Brooklyn Rep. Vito Fossella apologized to his constituents and family Friday after his drunk driving arrest, which he repeatedly called a "mistake."

Fossella, who represents parts of Brooklyn and Staten Island, was arrested early Thursday morning just outside Washington, D.C. His blood-alcohol level was 1.7, more than twice the legal limit in Virginia.

"I've embarrassed my family, the constituents of the 13th Congressional District and, of course, myself," said Fossella. "And for that I apologize."

Fossella wouldn't provide specific details of the incident, saying it was a legal matter. If convicted, the Republican representative could face a mandatory five days in jail.
