Funeral to be held Monday in Rockaway Beach for NYPD Officer Dennis Guerra, who died after Coney Island fire
BROOKLYN - Funeral arrangements have been made for NYPD Officer Dennis Guerra, who died after responding a fire in Coney Island Sunday.
Guerra, who had been on the force for seven years, died early Wednesday morning. He and his partner, Officer Rosa Rodriguez, made their way up to the 13th floor of a Coney Island high-rise to try and rescue people during the fire. Both officers were overcome by the smoke and a firefighter found both of them on the floor, unconscious. Rodriguez remains hospitalized.
Charges are expected to be upgraded against Marcell Dockery, the 16-year-old accused of setting the fire. Dockery allegedly told police he lit a mattress on fire because he was bored. The NYCHA is also taking steps to terminate his family's lease.
