BROOKLYN - Starting today, the Smith-9th streets subway station will be closed for a year-long rehabilitation project.

The $32-million project will include a new station entrance, new weather-protected escalator enclosure, a new platform and other changes. Brooklyn residents are divided on the project, with some calling the closure an inconvenience, while others say the work is long overdue. According to the MTA, the station will re-open next summer.
