BROOKLYN - ? Local officials are expected to mark the start of the two-year shutdownof the century-old Gowanus Canal Flushing Tunnel for a renovationproject.

The city's Deputy Commissioner for Sustainability CarterStrickland Jr. and others wil be present to mark the official shutdown.

A temporary oxygenation system to limit odorfrom the canal will be installed during the renovation.

The canal was at the center of controversy for years because environmental organizations wanted it cleaned up. However, Mayor Michael Bloomberg argued shutting down the canal would hurt businesses around the area.

The canal was designated for Superfund status early this year.
