Gravesend program ignites kids' interest in math

GRAVESEND - One school in Gravesend has found a new way to spark its students' interest in math.

At I.S. 228, sixth-graders eager to learn math flock to classrooms after school thanks to the new program School of One. The program, which is only being used at I.S. 228, requires students to work individually on laptops to learn math through quizzes and games. The key is students can't move onto the next level unless they know the material.

The classes are currently offered twice a week after school and typically have about 90 students on each of those days. Beginning in September, the school hopes to incorporate the program into regular classroom work.
