BROOKLYN - A group of concerned community members wants more studies to determine the health of the Newtown Creek in Greenpoint.

The creek has been tested for health hazards, but the Newtown Creek Community Advisory Group wants the state Department of Health to do more.

While Newtown Creek has been polluted for years, it has seen some more activities like fishing and kayaking following city efforts to clean the water. The advisory group also wants to ensure that fish caught in the creek are safe for people to eat.

Aside from environmental testing, the group and state Sen. Martin Dilan are asking for multilingual signs along the creek and community outreach.

News 12 reached out to the Department of Health for comment, but has not yet heard back.
