BROOKLYN - Police have killed a man they say pointed a gun at them and shot the owner of a tire shop.

The shooting occurred at Peter's Tires and Rims shop yesterday. According to officials, Carl Lastorino, 45, walked into the shop and opened fire, hitting the owner in the shoulder and hand.

Police say Lastorino then fled the scene, running a few blocks before trying to get into a white livery cab. Officers nearby heard the call on the radio, saw him running and then approached Lastorino as he was trying to get into the cab. According to police, officers asked him to drop his gun and that's when Lastorino pointed it toward them. Each cop fired one shot, killing him.

Lastorino was pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital. The owner of the shop is expected to be OK.
