Hair salon cop gets commendation for courage

BROOKLYN - The off-duty officer who successfully thwarted a would-be robber at a Bedford-Stuyvesant hair salon was honored today for her efforts.

City Council members and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly presented a proclamation to Detective Feris Jones for her bravery today.

Jones was getting her hair done at Sabine's Beauty Salon when an armed robber barged in. Jones immediately identified herself as a police officer. Police say the suspect, Winston Cox, fired at Jones four times, but missed. Jones fired back and injured Cox.

Jones was promoted from an officer to detective for her efforts. She is a 20-year veteran of the police force.
