BROOKLYN - New York City Health Department officials are looking into a possible chicken pox outbreak within the Orthodox Jewish community in Williamsburg.

Officials say there have been 75 reported cases of people being infected with the virus since March.

They say the median age of patients infected are between 3 and 10 years old.

Health Department officials say of the infected, 72 percent were not vaccinated against chicken pox and 14 percent had not received the proper dosage of vaccine.

According to the Center for Disease Control, chicken pox is an illness characterized by a rash. Once it progresses, it could cause lesions and then crust over. Lesions are usually most concentrated on the trunk of the body, according to officials.

Officials warn that chicken pox is highly contagious and that if you become infected, doctors say you have about two days before the rash will begin to show.

They recommend getting vaccinated and suggest anyone who thinks they or their child may have any of the symptoms of chicken pox to contact a doctor immediately.
