BROOKLYN - A report from the city?s Department of Health says there have been mixed results with its Healthy Bodega Initiative. Started four years ago, the program tries to ensure participating bodegas carry fresh fruits, vegetables and low-fat milk, while limiting unhealthy foods such as chips and candy.

The report found many participating bodegas saw an increase in people buying healthy foods. But health officials also recognized that more community outreach is needed to boost sales at bodegas.

Store owners have said that they are losing money by offering healthier choices because people just don't want them.

The Department of Health says it plans on improving the relationship between bodega owners and local farmers and farmers markets.
