Hugh L. Carey Tunnel reopens both ways

Both tubes of the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel

Both tubes of the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel have reopened in both directions to all non-truck traffic.

BROOKLYN - Both tubes of the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, formerly known as the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, have reopened in both directions to all non-truck traffic.

One tube was first reopened to buses on Nov. 12 and then to cars on Nov. 13. Use of the one side was limited to Manhattan-bound traffic in peak morning hours and Brooklyn-bound traffic during the evening rush.

The tunnel suffered extensive damage to its electrical, lighting, communication and ventilation systems due to heavy flooding from Hurricane Sandy.
