BROOKLYN - Brooklyn Community Services honored those who lend a helping hand to fellow borough residents.

The Human Spirit Awards held at the Hyatt on 42nd Street in Manhattan recognized community leaders who have mentored young people toward a career path. Others helped businesses bounce back after Superstorm Sandy.

The gala was also a celebration of the 147th anniversary of Brooklyn Community Services, a non-profit group that assists children and families.
