WASHINGTON - Dominique Strauss-Kahn has resigned as head ofthe International Monetary Fund. Strauss-Kahn, who faces sexual assault charges in New York City, told the IMF executive board in a letter that his resignation comeswith "great sadness" but that he felt compelled to resign. In the letter, Strauss-Kahn denies the allegations against him,but says he's thinking of his family and wants to protect the IMF. Police say Strauss-Kahn, 62, was picked out of a lineup by a Bronx woman who was his hotel maid at the Sofitel New York.

The 32-year-old maid told authorities that when she entered his spacious, $3,000-a-night suite early Saturday afternoon, she thought it was unoccupied. Instead, Strauss-Kahn emerged from the bathroom naked, chased her down a hallway and pulled her into a bedroom, where he sexually assaulted her, NYPD spokesman Paul J. Browne said. Lawyers for the diplomat are expected to ask a judgeThursday that Strauss-Kahn be released on bail. AP wire services contributed to this report
