Infant dies from lethal dose of medicine at Brookdale Hospital

BROOKLYN - Officials say a 6-month-old baby has died after receiving a lethal dosage of medication at Brookdale Hospital last week.

Ummay and Amin Sultana say they brought their son, Amaan Ahmmad, to the hospital last Thursday because he had an unusual cough and fever.

Amin says that there were no hospital beds available. She says her son was hooked up to an IV drip while still in his stroller and was given an antibiotic called Azithromycine. She says Amaan went into a coma and was on life support for several days.

Officials say Amaan Ahmmad died after receiving an adult dose of pneumonia medication. They say he was given 500 milligrams of the antibiotic, when he should have been given just 80 milligrams.

The hospital says it's investigating the incident internally. The New York State Health Department is also launching an investigation into Brookdale's emergency room.
