Interfaith Medical Center files for bankruptcy

BED-STUY - Interfaith Medical Center has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
 
Interfaith officials said they had no choice but to file for bankruptcy due to economic troubles. The hospital serves about 250,000 patients a year and has a staff of 1,500.
 
Hospital officials say most of their patients rely on Medicaid. When state officials cut Medicaid reimbursements by 40 percent in 2010, the hospital's debt grew.
 
There are no plans to close the hospital or change services. Interfaith officials say they are coming up with ways to pay off the debt.
