BROOKLYN - A 16-year-old student from Prospect Heights has died in an apparent drowning while on a class trip upstate.

Officials say that Jean Fritz Pierre was hiking Monday with 48 other students from International High School at Bear Mountain Park, which is about 45 miles north of New York City.

According to investigators, the ninth-grader broke away from the group with another teenager to go swimming in Lake Hessian, which does not allow swimmers. The students were reported missing at around 2 p.m., and park officials say the boy was dead by the time he was pulled out of the water at around 4 p.m.

School Chancellor Dennis Walcott says there will be an investigation into the incident, but that the student/adult ratio was appropriate. Four teachers and a parent chaperoned the trip.
