BROOKLYN - Thousands of people are lining up at Apple, Verizon and AT&T stores throughout the city to get their hands on the latest version of the iPhone.

The smart phones have been a hot commodity so the NYPD wants to protect owners by launching operation ID. Anyone who purchases an iPhone 5 is encouraged to have it engraved with a serial number that will make it easily identifiable if it's snatched.

News 12 has reported several stories this year involving stolen iPhones and other electronics, especially on local subways.
