BROOKLYN - An early morning fire in Bensonhurst has claimed the life of a Brooklyn resident.

Joseph Barbara, 38, was killed during the fire that broke out on the third floor of a home at 1759 73rd St. just after midnight.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames, but Barbara was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors believe Barbara was most likely killed by smoke inhalation. They say more precautions must be taken to prevent fires.

The official cause of Barbara's death and the fire are still under investigation.
