BROOKLYN - A jury has handed down a guilty verdict for one of the two men accused of murdering a Brownsville mother of 12.
Andrew Lopez was found guilty of second-degree murder and two counts of first-degree assault in the death of Zurana Horton. Jury deliberations are still underway for the second suspect, Jonathan Carrasquillo.
Horton was shot and killed in October 2011 when gunfire erupted outside P.S. 298. Horton was hailed as a hero after surveillance video showed she was hovering over several children, trying to protect them as the shots rang out.
Prosecutors say Lopez and Carrasquillo were aiming for rival gang members and that Horton got caught in the crossfire.
Lopez will be sentenced on May 7. He faces 75 years to life in prison.
