Kayandrea Kelley recovering after slashing on West 28th Street in Coney Island

The family says doctors told them had it been an inch closer to Kelley's eye, she could have died. (5/10/14)

BROOKLYN - A 19-year-old who was slashed and chased down the streets of Coney Island is recovering physically and emotionally following the attack.

Kayandrea Kelley says she was with friends near her Coney Island home when a woman came after her on Mermaid Avenue and West 28th Street. Kelley says the woman tried to fight her, and then took out a box cutter and slashed her in the face.

Kelley's mother, Shaquwana Farrow, rushed up from South Carolina after hearing what happened. When Farrow arrived, her daughter had been given more than 100 stitches.

The family says doctors told them had it been an inch closer to Kelley's eye, she could have died. Kelley believes her attacker had had a prior dispute with one of her friends.

Kelley says she plans on going down to South Carolina with her mother to heal.

Police say no arrests have been made in this case, and the investigation is ongoing.
