BROOKLYN - Those interested in battling flames and saving lives have until midnight tonight to sign up to become one of New York City's bravest.

The deadline to sign up for the firefighter exam was originally Friday, but the FDNY pushed it back.

The extension is all part of the FDNY?s massive recruitment effort to attract more minority and female candidates. A total of 41,000 people have signed up for the test so far ? 52 percent are white, 21 percent are black and 23 percent are Hispanic.

The department hasn't hired any new firefighters since 2007 after the last three exams were deemed discriminatory by a judge.

The department will hire candidates who pass the exam, as and when jobs become available.
